WHAT IS EARTHING? The connection between electrical appliances and devices with the earth plate or electrode through a thick wire of low resistance to provide safety is known as Earthing or Grounding. Earthing System or Grounding System in Electrical network is for safety purpose.   The Main objective of earthing system is to provide an alternative path for dangerous current to flow so that the problem of electric shock and damaging of equipment’s can be cured.Metallic part of an equipment are grounded and if the equipment’s insulation fails than there will be no dangerous voltages present in equipment box. The circuit gets sorted and fuse will blow immediately, in case the live wire touches the earthed case Particularly, it can affect the magnitude and distribution of current in short circuits through the system and the effects of the system are on equipment and people who will near to the circuit. Why you should have an Earthing System? This question is ge

How and Why to Take Manual Sounding On Ship?

How to take Manual Sounding? Sounding is a term used for taking a measurement of the amount of fluids in the tanks of a ship. Different type of sounding methods are used on board ships. In this article, we will take a look at the importance of taking manual sounding and the method of taking the same. Why Manual Sounding? On board ship, it is very important to keep the updated record of the quantity of liquids (in all forms) present in various tanks. A ship is fitted with different types of automatic and hydraulic/ pneumatic/ mechanical sounding measuring systems wherein the level of the liquid can be checked remotely or locally without manually measuring and calculating the liquid amount inside the tank. One cannot entirely depend on the automation and mechanical devices, especially when it comes to those substances, for which, negligence can cause oil pollution and machinery damages. Manual sounding is always preferred by all seafarers (deck and en

SMPEP (Shipboard Marine Pollution Emergency Plan)

SMPEP (Shipboard Marine Pollution Emergency Plan) Background MARPOL Annex II Regulation 17 requires every chemical tanker of 150 GT and above to carry a SMPEP. Scope of this plan is to provide guidance on the actions to be taken if a spill of oil or noxious liquid substance has occurred or is likely to occur. The plan is in line with IMO MEPC. 54(32), MEPC.86(44) and the SMPEP guidelines in Resolution MEPC.85(44). Plan Approval by the Administration or a Recognised Organisation (RO) on behalf of the Administration is mandatory.   Contents     Reporting Requirements     Steps To Control Discharge     National And Local Co-Ordination     Additional Information     List Of Coastal State Contacts     List Of Ship Interest Contacts     Summary of Flow Chart And Checklists     IΜΟ Resolution A.851(20)     Vessel Specific Information Info/Plans Required     Ship Specific Information
